It's amazing how a person's mind can change about something. Based on my visit to this
area in 2005, I was certain that the north slope was the only feasible route to the
mesa of the Goose Neck. The northeast slope, pictured here, seemed much too difficult
to ascend as a scramble (rugged hiking with occasional use of handholds for balance).
This view (from the plateau lying southwest of Thelma and Louise Point) convinced me
that I had been wrong: the north-east slope was definitely the preferred route. However,
there was one great uncertainty: was it possible to scramble up through the sandstone
layers lying between a certain white boulder and the long "shelf" that would get me
to the final slope below the mesa?
