I'm in the normal traffic lane. To the right are a buffer "lane," a bike lane., and a curb (not visible). The idea of bike lanes is good, but the implememtation is poor: cities don't clean them often enough. They act as deposit zones for all the debris created by motor vehicles---little stones, metal fasteners, clumps of dirt, and so on. I usually ride in the traffic lane to avoid the debris and pull into the bike lane to allow vehicles to pass. At night the traffic lanes are very quiet. The light above the street comes from a house.
