Petroglyph false alarm

view map

During a rest break in Behind the Rocks I thought I spied a petroglyph on a boulder. With binoculars I thought for sure the design had to be man-made. It just so happened that the boulder was very close to the route I had planned to take to reach my goal, so it was easy to make a slight detour to check out this discovery.

The effort was for naught as the "petroglyph" was merely a collection of erosion pits in the rock. The black bands on the bambnoo hiking stick are 12 inches (30 cm) apart.

My vantage point was at the center of this WikiMapia aerial view.

Looks like ancient 9mm (0.022 cubit) target practice
