South 180th Street goes under the Interurban Trail and two rail lines (UP and BNSF). It wasn’t always so---until 2003, the street was at track level. In Spring 2002, work began to convert the grade crossing to the present configuration.
The underpass was created to make rail and street transportation more efficient. Motorists no longer have to stop and wait for trains to go by. Train crews have one less grade crossing to worry about. The present configuration is friendlier to users of the trail: they no longer have to wait for street traffic to clear.
