The sign says "David Koontz. Born 1830. Died 1852. R.I.P."

David Koontz was one of the thousands of pioneers who came west on the Oregon Trail. He died of unknown causes and was buried along the trail. This is just south of the town of Echo, Oregon. About 20 feet behind the grave is the Union Pacific Railroad's line from Portland to Idaho and points east.
