Most people, upon seeing this type of mark in the road, would assume that it is merely a dry spot caused by a car's being parked there while a rain storm passed through the area. In fact, that interpretation is so prevalent that we're using it as the cover story to keep the public from getting hysterical from fear.
The real cause of this spot is not known for certain, but it is highly probable that it is a mark made by an Alien spacecraft that passed over this area within the last 500 years. (The time window was determined after technicians from the Covert Investigation Branch scanned the area with a plethora of devices.)
There are two schools of thought to explain the spot. One---the most widely held---is that the Aliens were surveying this godforsaken countryside with the aim of mapping it for a later invasion. The spot is thus a survey marker. The other theory, though less acknowledged, is the more interesting of the two: it suggests that a spacecraft's fratostatic implosion drive backfired, spewing a substance into the atmosphere that fell to Earth here, staining the surface of the road.
Initially it was thought that the spot presented no danger to the surrounding environment, but a rash of human mutations in the county caused analysts to re-assess the situation. After 1348 instances of deprived supralogical fremosis within the span of a year, wise minds prevailed and the landscape was bought by the Government. Landowners did not take kindly to the forced buy-out until they learned of the prices being offered, at which time everyone seemed eager to sell.
This area is now fenced and signed as "Military Testing Area" with the usual caveats about trespassing, danger, etc. Video/aural surveillance is ubiquitous. Toxicity endures. This image was produced from within a shielded vehicle; the photographer was wearing the latest protective bio suit to ensure his continued productivity.
The sanitized story for public consumption is that this is merely a dry spot caused by a parked vehicle during a brief rain, in northwestern Utah.
