Brake problems at Potash

Potash, Utah (southwest of Moab) view map

This Union Pacific train had dropped off some cars at the potash mine in the distance and picked up the tank cars seen here. Then it dropped the tank cars here and connected to a string of hoppers. This was in preparation for the return to Grand Junction, Colorado.

But something went wrong with the braking system. The crew worked for at least half an hour to solve the problem. Bleeding air tanks didn't help. Eventually, the engineer rebooted the computers, which made everything right. I took this picture while the crew was working on the problem.

Once the problem was solved, the train pulled forward of the switches, backed up to get the two tank cars, and left for Grand Junction. I hustled up the highway and photographed the train as it ascended Bootlegger Canyon.
