I never have used, and I never will use, a tent "footprint." I use groundsheets. The word "footprint" is an abomination. It was probably invented by some marketing idiot as a way to turn the lowly groundsheet into something more "sophisticated" so that the price could be greatly incrased. Sadly, even Recreational Equipment, Incorporated (REI) adopted the terminology years ago. Excuse me while I puke.
This groundsheet is polyethylene, originally part of a shipping cover for a mattress. It works just fine. My first groundsheet was a white polyethylene tarp sold under the brand name "Visqueen.". That was in the late 1960s or early 1970s. I might have bought it from REI.
Several items unrelated to tents hold the groundsheet in place in the morning breeze. One of them is the spare tire for my handcart.
