Driving up the Silver Island Backcountry Scenic Byway on my way to Crater Island was
uneventful until I drove right over this snake. Because of the lighting, the snake's
colors, and my speed, I didn't see the critter in time to stop. I walked back to it,
hoping I had not run it over. To my great relief I discovered that I had not hit the
snake. This was the first time I had seen a snake in the Silver Island Mountains.
