The Green Weenie and I (and Joe Tripod) are standing on a turn-out on the causeway that provides driving access to Floating Island, the mountain in the background. Mud flats surround the causeway and Floating Island. I car-camped here; the next morning I hiked to the top of Floating Island's south summit "because it was there" and because I wanted to see if it were possible to see from there the speed event taking place on the Bonneville Salt Flats (it was---with binoculars).
Other than being in the company of Joe Tripod, I was completely, utterly, absolutely, 100%, totally, and without a doubt, alone here. I saw no one else on the Byway (Silver Island National Backcountry Byway), on the causeway, or at Floating Island, which is not unusual. This area is so bleak that only the most devoted landscape nuts would enjoy it. The solitude was divine.
The skinny shadow at bottom is that of Joe Tripod, my photographic aide-de-camp. He was involved in this documentation. His shadow is visible here. In my right hand is the remote control that tripped the camera's shutter.
