Idaho: Driveway Portal

Seven miles northwest of Caldwell, Idaho, along I-84, is a structure that has fascinated me ever since I first noticed it while driving by on the interstate. It took me a few sightings to realize that it was the portal for a private driveway. It is on the west side of the freeway and is difficult to see when driving by in either direction, as it sits in a low area next to the interstate.

In 2009 I anticipated where it was while driving, which enabled me to photograph it. Every year thereafter noticed it when driving by and thought about seeing it up close. When planning my May 2014 trip to Utah I figured out how to drive to the thing to photograph it. A 15-minute jaunt on back roads took me to the thing. Up close it was more impressive than when viewed from the interstate at 70 mph, though the close view also revealed some flaws. The house that it belongs to is impressive and appears in the last photo.

It and its shadow appear at the center of this WikiMapia aerial view.
