I met Lion when he commented on my car pictures. Although never meeting him personally I could detect the spirit and love (and knowledge) for all automotive things and how he genuinely seemed to like people. I really enjoyed browsing these galleries...the photos, vision and spirit will live on...

On Sunday we are having our monthly photo shoot at Birch Aquarium again, followed by a walk around La Jolla. I remember when we did this together last year. We'll be thinking about you. We miss you!

Lion You were and still are a good friend to me, you may have gone in body, but in spirit you will always be here. As in mine you will live in everyones heart that has ever crossed your path.. I dont know how my self or anyone can now see a flower pet a cat see a majestic LION, or walk in the desert and not walk with you once again..

I met once Lion on a trip up Miller Jeep Trail in 2005. But since that time he always kept me updated via email with news on his latest adventures. And every time I put new photos in my own PBase gallery, I would see his comments a few days later. I've always been amazed at how easily he made friends, and effort he went to to keep in touch. He was a great example.

I met Lion on a photo shoot. I found him to be a gentle man with kindness for everyone. After reading many posts here, I can say I missed getting to know him better.

I am so sad, I lost a good friend today. I meet Lion about 22 years ago when I joined the Roughwheelers 4WD Club. We have both been on a lot of runs and trips together over the years. Even though I'd moved away from the South Bay area about 12 years ago, we still kept in contact. It's been a little over 2 years ago since I last saw and stayed at his "casa", but we email each other all the time. I shall miss him dearly. I know the great Lion is looking down upon us right now smiling, probably taking our picture. I know if there is a 4 wheel heaven, he's setting up camp and will be waiting for us to join him and start a run. God bless you, I shall miss you dearly.
Your buddy, Hotshot (Walter McMath)

Through tears, Spud has edited & produced a short video of Lion's recent audition for the On The Rocks TV show.
Once there, you can click on "Memories of Lion" at the top left to see photos (Mostly of Lion) that others have uploaded. The whole memorial site is:

We are organinzing a Memorial service for Lion now. We are talking about maybe Thursday eve, or Sat/Sun afternoon. We may also plan a memorial ash scattering run too. More news as it develops.

OMG! We will miss you Lion! Known you for 22 years…remember your first blazer… you used to walk that one too. Been and done a lot of places together. Will miss the awesome pictures you were yet to take. You will always been in our thoughts and hearts. You and Krista always had fun together here on earth…tell her ‘hello’ and that we miss and love her also.

We will miss the "Lion" . May you find the best trails always Kent.
Bruce Engstrom 07-Mar-2008 03:42
So sorry to hear of Kent's passing. I'm a high school classmate of his, and knew him very well during that time. Even though we went our separate ways after graduation, kent and I kept in contact via e-mail, and he always kept me abreast of how he was doing with his "hobbies." These included his photography and his love of his "Jeeping" activity. We will all miss a friend. Bruce Engstrom, Winter Haven, Florida

I will miss my good friend R. Kent "Lion" Nelson. Kent and I met in St Charles Il in 1961.
Kent was driving a customized red 57 chevy then, and continued to be a car person, especially 4x4's all his life. He invited me to join the Roughwheelers in 1973, and although we lived most of our lives over 1000 miles apart, we maintained a friendship all these years. I last saw Kent at my house in Colorado, and he even put up some pics on pbase on that trip. I talked to him two weeks ago, and all was good then. He was a surperb camera man, and shared some of his recent work on the pbase site. Rest well my friend.

Sorry to hear about Lion's passing.
I'd only met him a few times but he seemed to be a jovial
and kind person.
I hope he's at peace and still smiling wherever he is now.

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I report the passing on of our friend Lion. Lion was a happy friendly thoughtful guy without a mean bone in his body & he will be missed by many. Indications are that he passed on while sleeping at home. He was discovered there by a friend March 5th, 2008 after not returning some phone calls. No news on a memorial service yet, but you can bet there will be one.
There is an internet memorial for our friend here:
You may add your memories, comments and/or photos. (& please do) Lion always loved getting comments. His older photos are at
This certainly leaves a hole.

Damn...that's a very sad loss for everyone.
Lion emailed me 2/19/08, saying " Sorry I missed the (SoCalXJ) jambo and seeing you again. I totally forgot about it and I am mad at myself .Good photo report... I have been coming down to San Diego, as I am a member of a photography meetup group. I maybe coming down Saturday if it doesn't rain as there is a photo shoots at Balboa Park. If you like you could surf through the link below and see some of the shoots I have done with that group lasts year. Later Lion Photo Albums www /lion1934/profile") .

I'll miss you, Lion! You were a great guy, with a warm heart & full of love for life. Your memory & pictures live on...

Hi Lion,
Yes those are Illinois plates. Not my rod though. Just stumbled on the event coming home from Salt Lake. If you are into to speed events, go to this one. Beautiful scenery and tons of cool vehicles.

Thanks for the comments,

All that good food cooking in the dutch ovens looked so good!!! Nice pictures! Hard to believe that the desert gets that cold. Almost like being in Chicago without the snow. Love ya Joy

Lion, Thanx for the SanDiego Zoo pics. Have been there many times but you managed some beautifully detailed birds which I haven't seen there before. Next time I go will look more closely.

Hi Kent,
What a nice collection of pix. I always enjoy looking at the shots that you have taken. I can't believe some of the 4 wheeler treks!!
Keep up the great work
Lauren Hillquist 27-Oct-2007 22:04 do good work. I think we all (you, I and Good Wife Barbara) have come a long way since Geneva. And no regrets in the least for us and I am sure for you. You do good work with the pictures. We were 11 weeks in the portable condo (5th wheel) this summer up to Glacier, British Columbia, WA and OR mainly - came back with 1447 images and tossed at least that many. Take care!

Hey Lion, I like this site better. It's well organized and very easy to navigate, I like that you can easily select different picture sizes including the original. I don't know if you can do that with the other site. It's seems faster too. Also I didn't have to register and log in to view your pictures.
