I saw the Heron in a pond close to Royal farms, it was so cool. After, that I saw it a few more times in Salisbury.

I've only seen this type of bird once. I was on a canoe excursion with the Smithsonian. We were just cruising on Muddy Creek when a couple of them were roosting on some dead logs and occassionally waded in the shallows of the creek. When we got to close, it would fly off. When we came back from canoeing on the Rhode River, my group ended up drifting too close to one. Amazingly, it didn't move, but I sure got nervous because I didn't want this bird to peck my brother's eye out! Just look at the size of the beak! We got within 5 feet of the this bird before it flew off with a fish in its mouth. Turns out it was hunting all this time! And I got a picture of it flying off! So cool!

I think we just had one move into our community in Hampstead. Makes one heck of a noise when you approach it, seem to like the enviorormental pond next to middle school. Don't they like in pairs, or is this a lone male.

We just saw a pair of these in Rock Creek Park after heavy rain... groundfeeding. I had no idea we had GBHs here in Maryland. Now I know! THANKS for the info!

We were walking the Northwest Branch trail one day in early January, and saw a blue heron and a male mallard just chilling in the water. We even got fairly close and it just opened its wings then went back to sleep.
