We have these in Conowingo at our feeder regularly. They love suet. Some are big, the biggest one we have named Bob.

There are two at my feeders in Randallstown and they are huge!! The red of their heads is so brilliant and beautiful!!! I have two Brome feeders, one contains a Fruit and Nut Blend and the other contains a Select Blend Wild Bird Food.

Two are sitting in a flowering tree off my deck in Easton. They seem to like the waffles I put in the tree yesterday. There are also a couple of chick a dees and some bluejays.

Hello Mike,

Attached is a link to a good website that shows a bird's range and their habitat. Garrett County habitat is certainly conducive to hosting the Red-belled Woodpecker. You could also have the Downy Woodpecker, or the Hairy Woodpecker, visit your suet feeder. Other woodpeckers to be on the lookout for in your area are the Red-headed Woodpecker (more rare) and the Pileated Woodpecker. You might hear a Pileated well before you ever see one. Listen to their bird sound and be on the lookout. This same link will also give a sample of their "voice". Just do a search (in the search box) for the bird that you wish to hear. By the way, you can also tell the difference between the male and the female Red-bellied Woodpecker.

I think I saw one of these guys feeding on a suet cake we put out at our home in Garrett County. Can anyone confirm that these birds go that far West and in the "mountains." Thanks for posting the pictures and keep up the great work!

Well I live in Charlottesville VA and saw one eating from the bird feeder in the front yard. I had to search online to find out the name of such a beautiful bird. It was a breathe taking moment. Thanks for identifying and for curing my curiosity.
