I am in Arbutus Maryland. Seen this bird twice so far. One time last year about this time and today. He was getting some mice that were running in a neighbors backyard. Sat on a fence and ate one too. Beautiful bird. Wish he would be around more often to get mice and such.

I've seen this hawk twice and i live in White Marsh MD. I live in an apartment complex called Eagle Walk and there are huge tree nears the dumpsters. So im assuming he is sitting in the trees to get a view of the rodents that the dumpsters may attract. Beautiful bird !

i saw one in southeast pa. was looking out window and saw something raining down. it happened to be bird feathers, then i looked up at my neighbor tree (recently pruned) so tree had large leaveless branches and red tailed hawk was tearing away the feathers of his prey. must have been a pigeon or sea gull according to the feathers.

I believe I saw this Hawk today along Sycamore Creek in Rockville (about at Bauer Drive and Briarwood Terrace along the creek). I know that the hawks tend to be seen in between storm systems. This Hawk is very majestic I saw some white bars on the wings. It's exciting seeing the hawks. 3/17/12

Meryl - I live in Bethesda near glen echo and have seen the lighter brown hawk you describe a few times in the fall and spring. Just saw it today as well.

Spotted one of these outside my apartment in Cockeysville. He was being mobbed by 6 crows. He didn't seem that annoyed and went on his way. But he was very beautiful.

Southern Maryland, Lusby. I've seen them a few times here in my wooded yard, although they remain at the tree tops. Since I ground feed squirrels and birds, I'm assuming they're looking for a meal. Currently I'm watching the RTH on the webcam in NYC. They've named the one hatchling Pip. He should fly in about 10 days.. Anyone can find the web cam by googling NYC Red Talk Hawk Webcam.

I have a story about this hawk. I live in Salisbury, Maryland very near to Wicomico River. Two summers ago I was sitting near my hummingbird feeder watching my hummers feed when this large beautiful bird landed on a dead branch not twenty feet from me, I could not take my eyes off of him he was so perfect, so very beautiful! We sat there he and I for over thirty mins, he never looked at me, I couldn't take my eyes off of him! Then he flew away I must have blinked my eye for I didn't even notice that he had left. I wasn't sure what kind of a hawk he was so I came in and searched the internet trying to find him. Every hawk I viewed wasn't near a beautiful as the one that sat with me, or so I thought. Your picture is as close as I'll ever get thank you for posting this.
This I know sounds crazy but I couldn't get that hawk out of my mind for a very long time. My husband laughed when I told him of the hawk, when I told him the hawk sat with me, and how peacefull it was, then he said to me was the cat with you, and I said sitting on my lap, he said to me the hawk was waiting for the cat to get down off your lap. So much for the moment lol still I'll neve forget that day sitting with a hawk.

This year I saw him again, he was on the side of our dirt road, his wings were extended, he turned around to looks me then I noticed that he was getting ready to have his lunch a baby squirrel.

Must say this hawk is wonderful looking bird. But for someone who raising class A homing pigeons they are a nightmare they seem to love pigeon meat and don't hesitate to try to break in the screened area when they are hunting. just my 2 cent worth.

My 7 year old son and I just saw this bird in our backyard in Bethesda -- it was the second time and we couldn't figure out what kind of bird it was until now. He seemed totally unafraid of us and allowed my son to take lots of pictures of him. Cool!

Saw one in my yard on 12/18/10 (yesterday). He was being followed by two black birds. Watched him for 15 minutes. Beautiful. First time I have ever gotten a close look at a bird like this in the wild. My yellow lab was going nuts that he couldn't go out there, but I wanted the time to watch this bird.

I saw this hawk flying at me - or rather my 3 lb Yorkie on our deck - I took her right inside - I know it was coming at her and there was more than one, if you think it was another kind of hawk, please post but to me if looked like this one with a white belly and after I put the dog in they started making this awful sound and flew off. Guess they were not happy they couldn't get lunch, but it was very scare, North Ocean City.

Yesterday a hawk landed on the railing of my deck. Cooed a few times. I heard the sound first and thought that it was a dove. I did a double take when I noticed how large it was. Seemed like grey wings--they were folded and 12inches or more in height. It turned toward me --was actually watching my cat--and it had a cream chest with brownish spots that were well spaced. I see these hawks on Rt 70 heading towards Hagerstown quite often. Even in winter they are sunning themselves. What is this hawk? I am not in a rural part of Rockville so I was surprised to see it on my deck. I was 12 feet away at the most. It seems to spend most of its time on the telephone wires on Darnestown road looking at the back of Shady Grove Hospital or on the University of Maryland side for the last two years at least.

Hi Meryl,
I just saw one today 2-19-09. Big and beautiful, tan colored feathers. It looked about 18" tall and it was way up in the tree. We have rodents so I'm sure why he was visiting. I read that these can be born lighter colored and just stay that way.

Has anyone ever seen one of these that is a very light brown color? Almost the beige of a camel, with white spots? I'm trying to figure out what kind of hawk it was, but it was in my backyard in Bethesda. I can't identify it from any of the books I have. It had a white spot right above it's beak. It was quite large and beautiful.

When the wife sees this bird in the back yard, she goes crazy with worry about her birds at the feeder. She gets a police whistle, and runs around the yard blowing it and waving her arms. (The poor neighbors haven't called the police, yet.) The hawk used to fly off when she did this. Lately, he just sits up in a tree waiting for her to run out of breath. His next move, I suspect, will be to swoop down, pick her up, and fly away police whistle and all. I'll miss him.
