Last sighting I saw of this beautiful bird was at Robert Lee Park, Mt. Washington (N. Baltimore) at the bottom of the dam in late afternoon. They're able to stand quite upright.

There are a bunch of these that have nested at Baker Park in Frederick, Md. They have multiple nests in the pine trees by the lake. Beautiful!

Three night herons flew into the marsh in West Ocean City and quickly gobbled up two baby chicks last week.

I have one that sits outside my office window at USNA. His markings on his belly are black spotted, but he's a cutie just looking for a fish breakfast. Pretty bird.

I agree, I'd love to have one in my backyard!

Charlie, I saw what I believed was a Black-crowned Night Heron standing on a pile at the fishing pier at Stansberry Park. I looked it up in Kauffmans field guide and the picture shown was a dead ringer for what I saw however when I looked at your picture the color was much bluer. Mine was gray. Is it normal to have color variations like this?
