We have a number of old Avery weights in our garden, used for ornamentation by previous owners although their roles have migrated since we’ve occupied the space. There is a much bigger one than this – possibly 20lbs, although I am not sure about this as I’m being too lazy to go and check. It’s used to stop Mo from wriggling her way under our gate and into the front garden where there is a bird table that she has decided contains better pickings than what’s available elsewhere.
This one is now a door stop, holding open the back door so it doesn’t slam shut.
It occurred to me today when I was moving it to close the door that at 7lbs it’s actually heavier than baby Alice who is now two months old. She’s really the tiniest baby I have ever seen (not that I’ve seen many newly born babies). Her head is probably about the size of a tennis ball.
So that’s why it’s my shot – it’s a heavy weight in comparison to the newest human being I’ve ever met.
Last year, I was photographing a sewing machine.
