Sometimes you just feel as though you are in heaven? Oh that’s where I’ve been tonight. I’ve been in the company of a genius. A HUGE man. My hero.
It’s been Elvis Costello’s return to the London stage and I was in the fourth row to witness this monumental event. The man arrived on stage to the sound of the magnificent 007….well, I think that’s what it’s called but I’ll confirm tomorrow….
He started with songs from two of my favourite albums of all time – King of America – Blue Chair then Uncomplicated from Blood and Chocolate. Me while this is going on? I’m melting into my chair. I think I’m in love with this man’s views on love. He just tells it like I feel it every time. Unerringly. Unswervingly and without complication. I can’t tell you how his voice makes me feel. It’s indescribable. I can tell it at a hundred paces – I know every time he ad libs in the background in Squeeze’s ‘Black coffee in bed’ and I think I know every song. Gush gush gush gush gush gush gush!!!!!
For more than two hours he belts out hits from every album, new songs and old all rubbing shoulders in one big glorious mass of venom, love, mystery, anger, lust and so so so much more.
I had my camera in my bag…and DMs 50mm 1.8mm lens. I was a bit nonchalant about it and didn’t get it out until quite a way through the set and when I started shooting he caught me. Taking his photo. I expected a hand on the shoulder and an order to delete the memory card any second but no. I didn’t get that. I got his full attention. He came to my lens and played for me. This is the result.
I am in awe. I am thrilled. I am overwhelmed.
AAAAAaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHH
Last year.....melt, my lover melt......
