For Beth to remember her grandmother by

My dear friend Beth asked me to photograph a magnolia in memory of her grandmother. I found it remarkably difficult to do - I don't have one in my own garden and as most are in front gardens often they don't have any nice backdrop. Anyway, I managed to sneak this shot of one down the street - it's pointing upwards to avoid the clutter of house, phone lines and power cables in the background!

Thank you Linda. I could almost cry over that! I am not a great story teller, but this is why I asked if you could kindly take the photo for me...

When gran died a couple of years ago, I suddenly realised I didn't know what her favourite flower had been. It seemed quite significant, because even though we had been extremely close (and still are), it made me feel the loss quite intensely. I asked my mum if she knew and she said, oh I suppose it was a rose.

Unsatisfied with that answer, I wanted to find out, so, I asked if it might be revealed to me. Shortly after, I was having a massage with my favourite masseur in the whole world, Amanda, when suddenly a picture of a flower I had never seen came into my mind's eye. I wondered what it was and literally within minutes of leaving the clinic, I found myself walking into a florist and there on the front counter was the flower that had appeared to me. I asked the guy what the flower was and he told me it was a magnolia.

Since then, I have seen countless magnolias and always feel a sense of love, hope and peace when I look at them. I even looked it up the other day to find that they represent love of nature, dignity and perserverence - the very qualities that represented my gran.

So, as it is almost 3 years since her passing, I wanted to get a picture of one framed and have it in my house, so that year round, I can enjoy the beauty of this most magnificent creation.
