13th January 2004 - a revolution in the knicker drawer!

I had to travel home on the train today because David needed my car to drive around the countryside full of Spanish women’s hair removal products – don’t ask! His wasn’t big enough….there are some things a beetle just can’t manage.

Because of this luxury of an hour and a half on the train, I was able to continue reading ‘Elegance’ by Kathleen Tessaro – the book I started a week or so ago while on the train, read half of, then subsequently allowed to languish in the bottom of my handbag because I’ve not been on a train since (and at home I’ve had my Southern cookbook to read). Anyway, the chapter I started reading tonight was about underwear …..or as she describes it, ‘lingerie’. Genevieve Antoine Dariaux, who wrote the book that inspired ‘Elegance’ wrote:

‘Women are making a mistake in neglecting this potential addition to their charms. In short, when you dress, always think that later on you will be getting undressed and in front of whom’. The heroine of the story goes on to describe her own knicker collection as being ‘catholic… specially designed to repel the lustful advances of the opposite sex’.

Oh boy, I thought of my own knicker drawers and their grey, shapeless ‘whites’ and the black stuff with no elastic left, holes and strangely coloured patches (I’m sure Jo liberally sprinkles my stuff with bleach sometimes before washing it!).

She went on to describe how when married she used to change into a shapeless nightie in the bathroom then make a dash for the duvet….oh no, I did that too (when I was married)….but with shapeless jammies rather than nighties.

Quick, as soon as I got home I was like a woman possessed. The knicker drawers opened, all the horrid things discarded, a pic taken and my diary written up.

Only problem is……I don’t know what I will be able to wear tomorrow – my drawers are now empty!!!

I've just had a laugh updating this - I called the pic 'knickerssmall' - that's where I'm heading tomorrow lunchtime!

This is all too much for me. You will be pleased to know that I shall keep my Y-Fronts to myself.

Ha! The habits we girls fall into when we are in our 'comfort zone'! I am the first to hold my hand up to M&S cotton knickers, and strangely enough I was sorting out my smalls when I spoke to Mum just now, and she told me to look at your Pbase photo!!!

This has given me a fab idea as to what to get you for your birthday (in 7 months time!!!). There is an amazing, stunning and HILARIOUS woman I know called Rosemary Hawthorne (a Vicar's wife from Tetbury, Gloucestershire) who is lovingly known by me and my colleagues as 'The Knicker Lady'! She is a fashion historian who has an incredible collection of knickers (amongst other things) dating back from the beginning of 'knicker time'!

She has written books with titles such as 'KNICKERS - An Intimate Appraisal', 'STOCKINGS AND SUSPENDERS - A Quick Flash', and 'BRAS - A Private View' (Including a sketch of an inflatable bra from the 60's that exploded at high altitude)!!! Funnily enough, I nearly mentioned her a while ago when you were talking about manners, as she has also written a book called 'DO's AND DON'TS - An Anthology of Forgotten Manners'. DON'T BUY THEM!!! I will get them for your birthday, and they are COMPLETELY HILARIOUS!!!

This would be a real insight for our American friends to see how potty the Brits have been over the years... I would recommend the set to anyone!

Go get some sexy smalls Girl!! Love, Sis XX
