It’s my last day of freedom today – back to work after taking some holiday over Christmas. I am going to have to get used to being up at the crack of sparrows again tomorrow. I’m straight back in at the deep end, with a presentation all afternoon!
Have I been living the high life today in honour of my last day of freedom? NO!
Actually, looking at this photo you’d think I’d been doing back-breaking gardening all day. In fact though this was just a pleasant interlude in a day of working on my PC. At about 3.30pm, I decided enough was enough and went outside for some fresh air. I planted up a border that’s been very neglected in recent years, partly because I’ve been so busy but also partly because it is raised, bordered by a row of trees and VERY dry in the summer so things often die in there through lack of water. I rarely water anything that’s planted straight into the ground……it would just take me too long. I do also belong to the school of thought that says if you don’t water the plant will develop a better, deeper root system to find its own.
Sometimes this theory works – the Coral Bark Maple in the front garden seems to have had no ill effects from this approach though other things seem less keen!
It was dusk by the time I finished planting the plants that had been bought on New Year’s Eve into the bed that I’d prepared with home made compost (hens and rabbits are good compost makers!) on Friday. I feel very satisfied to have done the work. Often things from nurseries and garden centres can wait weeks before I get chance to plant them up. This holiday has given me a bit more freedom.
It’s the first really good break in many years when I’ve not HAD to do anything much. Even when we go on holiday I normally have to spend quite a bit of time ‘working’. What have I done? Laid on the sofa watching TV and reading? NO – I’ve been very industrious, working on a project that’s not quite finished but as soon as it is, I’ll tell all! I was hoping to finish it today but the final touches are taking longer than I'd expected.
