Once the pan is full, add a good grinding of pepper, not salt at this stage - wait till the end for that.
Also add about a tablespoon of tomato puree, give a good stir and bring to the boil.
Once boiling, turn down the heat to its lowest setting and go away and forget the soup for a couple of hours. The slow heat will let the flavours develop properly - nothing good comes quickly!
