29th July 2014 - storing (useless) ideas

This is a photo of our TV screen. Nothing remarkable in that, you might say. Agreed, I’d reply. What makes it remarkable, at least to me, is the fact that it’s displaying the ebook that’s on my Hudl. The Hudl is connected to the TV so that we can watch Hive Alive on iPlayer, which we missed on TV. I didn’t realise that I could display anything from the Hudl on the telly in this way. My mind started to ping ideas – most notably that children’s books can be displayed and therefore children can each communally read in class. They can take turns to read a sentence out loud from while all of the other children read along. All you need is an HDMI port on your computer and Bob is your uncle.

Mind you, DM says he didn’t see a single example of a computer with an HDMI port on any of the equipment in the schools he has worked in. I find school equipment perplexing. They have this really weird mix of electronic gadgetry, most of which is outdated and it’s often poorly maintained. At the moment they are all rushing out buying iPads at huge cost but the Hudl represents much better value for money and it can certainly do all of the things I’ve seen iPads used for in schools. I just don’t get it.

The sad thing is that I can store up ideas for lessons but as I type I have no idea whether I’ll ever manage to get myself back into a classroom and in front of children again. I know I’m banging on about the lack of a job but the combination of this limbo-land of unemployment and total lack of self-belief are crippling me.
