15th September 2013 - bleak

It’s been a raw day across the UK and although we’ve been lucky enough not to get the worst of the cold (we understand it’s been down to 2⁰C in some parts of Scotland today), we’ve had 30-40 mph winds with rain and fog thrown in for free.

All of which is a shame because we promised the folks that we’d take them to the RAF Davidstow Moor museum. What we didn’t realise when we set off is that there are in fact two museums next door to one another, both broadly in the same area – the history of the airfield – but run and managed separately. My Dad was like a pig in muck. He loved every last dusty old relic. He picked the staff (almost certainly volunteers) up on a number of points of RAF history. He chatted…and chatted…and chatted. He chatted for England. He chatted for Queen and country. He related stories of his life in the RAF.

Honestly? Despite being assured that “the women will also love it” by the bloke who ran one of the two museums, I was a tad bored and would have got around both museums in the time it took for my Dad to greet the staff in the first one BUT what’s important was that he had a great time.

He came away with a huge grin on his face and declared them to show a different angle to the official RAF museums at Cosford and Hendon, being much more about the people of the force rather than the officialdom. It was true to say that even as a lay person, I could appreciate that these two museums were a labour of love for their founders.

We got soaked walking in between the different bits of the museums and in one of these trips, I noticed this sight – the RAF flag almost being ripped from its flagpole by the wind with nothing but whiteout behind it. It makes a pretty good summary of what today has been about. This is a shot of DM on the airfield on a day when the weather was better!

Great to hear about dedicated people with a passion...

Not exactly the V&A but good that people volunteer and make the effort to keep the memories alive.
