Kedainiai

Kedainiai view map

It may look like mountains covered by snow. But in fact there are no mountains in Lithuania. This is storage of industrial waste - Phosphogypsum.
There is a large chemical plant in Kedainiai, producing phosphoric fertilizer, phosphoric acid and similar products. For each ton of phosphoric acid the plant also produces about 5 tons of phosphogypsum, which has no practical usage. All the phosphogypsum produced is transported to the field nearby the plant. This slum was started in 1963, and currently it occupies an area of 84 hectares. There are about 22 million tons of phosphogypsum stored and about 5000 tons are added every day. The highest "mountain" is 60 meters high.
Phosphogypsum is considered not to be too dangerous to the environment. However, not everyone agrees with that. Many local residents are unhappy about these "snowy mountains". There is some research going on about possible usage of phosphogypsum as construction material. But so far these white mountains are only growing higher.
