Fairy Chimneys - rock formations typical for Cappadocia region in Turkey.
Millions of years ago two volcanoes - Erciyes and Hasan were active and covered an area of 20000 square kilometers with lava. After volcanoes became extinct water and wind destroyed much of the softer rock (tufa), but upper layer of harder rock (basalt) was less affected by erosion, so it formed "caps" on top of the rocks.
