which side do you walk?

~ Wherever you go, may each line you cross bring you a step forward,
May each smile you see uplift your weary heart,
May each touch give you a sense of comfort and courage,
May each ray of sunshine brighten your shadowed life.
Never fear shadows, as there is always a light shining somewhere nearby.
And for you who walked in darkness have seen a great light... ~

I see something very different here. 'Which side do you walk', the light (good) side, or the dark (bad) side? In other words: what's to become of the boy. Will his mother, holdin him by the hand, succeed in keeping him on the good path on the bright side of life, or will the person behind him succeed in his malicious intentions, while talking to him, while the boy is clearly paying attention, luring him into the grey area, represented by the bright/dark pattern on the ground, eventually taking him to the dark side of life.

Maybe I have too much fantasy, but for me, this is one of your most expressive images ever, depicting a story that will always be valid, each and every day, until eternity.

You framed it do deliberately and waited for them to reach that sweet spot before they exited the frame. Impressive too how the criss-crossing of the shadows doesn't encroach upon the people who are more clearly dilineated against the stark wall.

I come back again again to this photo. Love the way you composed it!

Magnificent capture of the shadows. I love the way it's split, this one. Fantastic to look at. The figures break it up so well.

You found the place where light and shade have dipper meaning.
Well thought and well seen, AL!

This reminds me of an Arabian tale in which a boy tells his mother about the genie who walks behind. This picture has the same magic.

Love this, Al. V

Love this shot Al, the third member doesn't bother me at all because I love the bent shadow he creates. It got me thinking...Is he the father, or a stranger following them.? ..the turning head of the child...gives it a dramatic perspective...almost malaevolent... Having said that,...wish I'd taken it... :-) KMc

Wow! The lines of the shadows and of the road are great! I love the words as well! Wonderfully caught!

I do love the light and shadow and the slight downhill tilt and how you move from dark to light. After reading David and Phil's comments, it looks like the third person is stalking them! - especially with the boy looking back.

A marvellous composition, the contrast is as perfect as can be,have to agree about the third person, but what can you do?Love this and votes!:-)

Very interesting composition Ai Li, in every aspect.

I agree with David. The third person is not as abstract as the mother and child. She almost seem to be an observer, rather than a participant here, mainly because she is described, while the mother and child are symbolic abstractions in virtual silhouette. The dramatic point of the image is the journey through darkness into the light, and that journey would have been more daunting if made by just two, instead of three. Less is often more, Ai Li.

you have got the right lines

I like the interplay between the shadows and the planks.
I also like the way the composition leads the eye to subjects

Beautiful play of light and shadow. The gate's draw leads the eye towards the people.
Ciao Barbara

I know it's an annoying thing to say but I wish the third member of the group wasnt there! She does add a different dynamic but in terms of a perfect composition the mother and son in near silhouette on their own would be a joy. Hehhe just getting you back for the finger comment earlier!!
Marvellous image and perfect in monotone. Well worth waiting for.
