MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND, GULF OF MAINE

One of the most fascinating aspects of migration, especially as seen on Machias Seal Island, is the unusual juxtaposition of species that frequently occur.
Here is a Spotted Sandpiper, a shorebird, sitting beside an Ovenbird, a denizen of the forest floor.
It's 3 o'clock in the morning and they are perched on a metal railing 65 feet in the air.
Now that's "out of habitat"!
