Peru 1996

These scanned photos come from climbing trip to Huaraz, Peru in 1996. Huaraz is the jumping off point for climbers to the Cordillera Blanca, including Huascaran, 6768m / 22,132' the highest peak in Peru. Huascaran was our goal. An initial warm up climb to acclimate on Nevado Pisco 5760m / 18,897' left me with pulmonary edema, a dangerous condition. I hiked down weak as a kitten, escorted by my friend, Phil who gave up his climb to help me.

Later I went on to a successful tour up the Santa Cruz drainage to summit Alpamayo 5947m / 19,511'. In 1966, in a contest of photographs in Munich the Alpamayo was elected the most beautiful mountain of the Earth. Though I had plenty of rock climbing experience, this was my first ice climb. Placing a screw on front points at 19,000' is a quick education in survival!

Photo quality is not great. Although I brought an Olympus OM-10 SLR camera for town, I realized once I was there I could not handle the extra weight and bought a cheap Kodak point & shoot and shot slide film on the Alpamayo climb. These slides were then scanned.
