Los tres valles centrales: The confluence of three rich valleys, surrounded by the Sierra of Southern Mexico has been occupied for millennia. The archeological remnants of the great Zapotec civilization at Mount Alban and Mitla are seen here. Fifteenth century stone buildings with thick walls comprise the old center of Oaxaca centered around the Zocalo. Colorful hand dyed wool rugs from Teotitlan de la Valle are in the markets along with Majordomo chocolate (by the kilo), bushels of dried chilis, black clay pottery, abrujes and a wealth of local items.
