Kovalam: Tsunami impact on small Indian fishing village
December 2004 a 9.3 earthquake near Sumatra triggered a tsunami that damaged thousands of miles of coastline. The Indian fishing village of Kovalam was hit by two waves. There was enough warning that only six people died, but the property damage is significant. Thirty families lost their homes, local fishermen lost boats, motors and nets. Minimal government assistance was provided, but it is not enough to help this village recover from the damage.
