Stone Age humans brought deer to Scotland by sea. DNA reveals the animals were introduced by boat - and may have come from as far as the Mediterranean. DNA analysis has revealed red deer on the Outer Hebrides and Orkney are not related to those on the Scottish mainland, Ireland and Norway The animals arrived on the remote islands around 5,000 years ago. But they appear to have been brought there by boat over great distances. Researchers say they now hope to do new tests to pinpoint their origins.
