When Thor Heyerdahl visited in 1955 the only mode of transport between Easter Island and the mainland (Chile) was the annual visit of the Chilean navy supply-ship. Now there are flights 3 times per week, between Easter Island and Chile, (5-6 hours flight) and the islanders get reduced rates, off-peak. Given that it is the most remote inhabited island in the world, connections to the outside world are important.
