A fine look on the brakewheel. The brake is a block- or flemish brake. Wooden blocks are connected together with iron strapwork and are positioned around the brakewheel. If you pull the brake the wooden blocks are clamped around the brake wheel so that it comes to a stop due to friction. It has to be done carefully so that no fire breaks out due to the friction.
