On the right you see a piece of the brakedrum and left, the counter brake. This is used to prevent the mill to turn backwards. This is possible if the mill is in rest and the wind comes from behind the sailcross. If this happens, the normal brake will not work as it is only working in 1 direction. So if the miller has finished working, he lowers the wooden beam with teeth into the brakewheel to prevent this.
