We stayed 3 days in Georgetown. On the first day we went up the Penang hill with the funicular. As it was very hazy, expensive and there were many tourists we would not do that again. Also you cannot do a lot at the top of the mountain. On we went to the Kek Lok Si temple, which is nice to visit, even though again there are loads of Tourists (mainly Asian - we did not see that many Western tourists in Penang). For the afternoon we visited the botanical garden. Again we cannot recommend this as we have seen far nicer botanical gardens. The next two days we rented a motorcycle to explore the island on our own (mainly the north west with the national park, tropical fruit farm, spice garden and the beach (cannot be compared to the nice beaches we stayed in Thailand)). It was fun driving on the left side, overtaking wherever possible and cruising through heavy evening traffic in Georgtown - it's boring to drive again in Austria.
The food in Georgetown is fantastic. We ate almost always in Little India at Indian restaurants.
Malay People are also very friendly, helping as soon as they see that you are lost or just coming up to chat with you.
