Casey's June Beetle (Dinacoma caseyi)

Casey's June Beetle is restricted to the Palm Canyon Wash alluvial floodplain in Palm Springs, California.
Much of its former habitat within this floodplain has been converted for commercial and residential development.
Ongoing threats include flood control activities and off-road vehicle use within Palm Canyon Wash and adjacent areas.
Male beetles actively search for females on warm evenings in April and May. The larger flightless female emerges briefly at dusk for mating.
This pair was observed within Palm Canyon Wash east of Smoketree Ranch. Mating usually lasts only one or two minutes before the female retreats down her emergence hole and prepares for oviposition.
