Hunting at Hill 'n Hound Farm Saturday November 12th

Huntsman: Eleanor Hartwell
Whips: Lee, Gene, and Gary
First Field: Werner, Ron, Tom, Leslie G
Hilltoppers: Gerda, Leslie A, Tess, Anne

GPS readings 11.5 miles 2:08 moving 0:57 stopped. 13.81 miles when laid on the Topo Map (note, forgot to turn on the GPS right at the start so drew that on the topo map)
Max speed 23.5 mph
Moving average 5.4 mph

Temperature ranged from 54 deg. F at the start to 67 deg. F when we finished. We were out from 9AM until 12:30 pm with staff out longer to gather hounds. Barometric pressure was falling, it was cloudy with sprinkles very occasionally. Wind were from the south and sometimes gusting over 20 mph.

We headed North up the farm road and turned west into the corn field and drew up along the Macoupin river. With the gusty winds the scenting conditions were terrible. Eleanor picked up the hounds and headed south toward Sherwood forest trying every patch of woods along the way. We saw lots of deer and the hounds were very good about not pursuing them. One doe came out of the woods and almost ran headfirst into the field. After three hours, mostly blank with no views by anyone, we headed in. One exciting thing was that Tom broke a stirrup leather. Did a great job of staying on. Then Tess loaned him the leather she carries and that one broke that within 100 yds., next Ron donated the stirrup leather he uses as a grab strap and Tom was able to finish the hunt with that. Leslie A was riding her new horse. Gene was riding their new black horse, Lee was on the Pinto. Tess was riding Leslie A’s Paint Horse. I was riding my chestnut paint mare.

This was my first try with the new camera out hunting. I was pleased with the results. It's hard to find a point and shoot that is small enough to carry and still get good photos. I think it is an improvement over the old camera though still not perfect. I'd like to be able to carry Don's Nikon D2X but that just is not practical. If I fell off, I might hurt the camera!
