Saturday June 17th Alyeska

We took a morning ride up the tram and had lunch on the mountain. We saw people carrying Para-sailor packs but we didn’t see any go down. There were quite a few people skiing and snow boarding up there and there was a lift running that was similar to the vistabahn. The view of Turnagain Sound was spectacular. I had a reindeer sausage for lunch. We rode the tram down and then readied for our float trip. We took a van to the flat place which was up the Seward Highway past where we were on Portage lake. They had us put on dry suits and rubber boots and then we got back on the van this time it was pulling a trailer with three rafts. We got out at a small creek named “Granite Creek”. It was swiftly flowing with small rapids here and there, not very deep. Since only 5 were allowed on the raft we split up and John and Cal went with another couple while the girls stayed together. Our raft guide was “Tom” who was quite handsome. Turned out he was indeed a television star having done several commercials as a kayaker. Tom was quite the accomplished Kayaker. He spent the winter as a Ski Patroller at Alyeska. Granite Creek flowed into 6 mile creek. Our total float was 14 miles and it passed very quickly. The only wildlife we saw was a pair of Harlequin Ducks that floated down ahead of us. After we were done we came back to the place and put our regular shoes back on. Our van driver stopped at a beautiful footbridge over the 6 mile creek. It shoed the level five rapids in the canyon below where we were. It was a beautiful spot with bluebells and moss. The canyon walls were quite impressive. On the way back to Alyeska we saw a Moose Cow and Calf galloping toward the Seward Highway. Fortunately they crossed the highway behind us. We also saw a pair of swans in one of the ponds alongside the highway. For dinner we went to the Teppanyaki restaurant in the hotel. The food was good but prepared on a table away from the table so you didn’t get the up close and personal food cooking of normal.
