Aghulas and surrounds

Aghulas is the Southern most point of the African continent. It is the meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans with a treacherous coastline and attrocious weather. The rocky coastline is strewn with wrecks - some recent wrecks are visible on the rocks. Other, older wrecks are buried below the waves. To counter this problem, a lighthouse was buildt at Aghulas in 1849. Initially it was fired with the fat recovered from sheep's tails. Today very high wattage electrical lamps fullfil this lifesaving task.

East of Aghulas lies the fishing villages of Struisbaai and Arniston. The locals have fished these waters for generations, and not only are they highly knowledgeable about the weather and sea conditions, the food that they prepare from their catches is world class.
