The iconic turf-roofed church in the village Saksun
Saksun is a remote little village on Streymoy Island in the wild Faroe Islands. The Saksun Church (Saksunar Kirkja), famous for its iconic turf roof and white-walled exterior, was built in 1858. Originally located in Tjørnuvík, villagers disassembled the church and carried it over the mountains to Saksun to avoid a difficult journey for services. The building is a traditional white wooden structure with a black-turfed roof, which provides both insulation and protection from the wet Faroese weather. The area features historical,, grass-roofed houses and is adjacent to the Dúvugarðar museum farm, which provides insight into 17th-century rural life in the Faroe Islands. Τ
