The railway was build by the Ottomans to link Damascus with the holy places of the Hijaz (Medina and Mecca). Another important reason was to improve the economic and political integration of the distant Arabian provinces into the Ottoman state, and to facilitate the transportation of military forces.
The Hejaz railway has a central role in the Great Arab Revolt and the story of Lawrence of Arabia.
