Today´s building is a Baroque Palace built 1669-81 by Queen Hedvig Eleonora. The architect was Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. In the cellar are remains of Gustav Vasa´s Castle built towards the end of the 1550s.
The palace was furnished in the 1730s by Queen Ulrika Eleonora the Younger assisted by architect Carl Hårleman.
Starting in 1868, the Palace was used by the Army Riding School. The Army moved from Strömsholm castle in 1960, after which it has been restored and serves as a Museum.
