Medieval cross, Sancta Britas Chapel and Lighthouse Kapelludden.

Öland/Kapelludden

During the Middle ages this was the site if Sikavarp, a very important commercial centre and export harbor.
During the 12th and 13th centuries, herring was sold here to Hanseatic merchants, who delivered it to the catholic countries of Europe for Lenten use. In return the people of Öland obtained salt for preserving fish and meat.
During the late medieval period, Sikavarp exported stone for the cathedrals then being built on the Continent
Through the Middle Ages the port was probably adminstered by the Church.
Following he reformation under Gustav Vasa in the 16th century, trade was confined to the towns and cities, and Sikavarp lost its commercial standing.
The stone cross, which is more than 3 metres high, may have been putup so that seafarers and fishermen would be able to worship here, even though there was no church here in the earlier periods.
