The Metro to the Montmartre district stops about 2 blocks from the Sacre-Coeur Church which is the main reason most visitors come to this district. The walk to the church goes through colorful busy streets filled with shops and eateries and a gauntlet of hawkers vying for your business. Due to the endless stream of visitors and the business it attracts, there is a festive and carnival like atmosphere surrounding the church. The Sacre-Coeur Church is located on the highest elevation point in Paris and can be seen from afar throughout the city. The montmartre district is also well known as the place where artists such as Renoir, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso once lived and painted.
