In July 2007, Kay and I traveled to Mendocino County for two nights. The motel in Fort Bragg was older than we expected, but our room had a great view of their private ocean cove and overlooked the dense coastal woodlands leading to the ocean. Birding was excellent from the second story balcony so I spend hours in the mornings and evenings spotting birds and listening to various songs and calls. I believe I even saw a pileated woodpecker in flight. I wouldn't mind spending a few days here during fall migration.
For fun, we rode the tandem to Mendocino taking side roads through Caspar and Pt. Cabrillo to avoid Highway 1. Lucky for Kay, there was an "Arts and Craft Fair" in Mendocino for the weekend so she was in heaven. Luckily for me, she didn’t buy much. The riding was great even though there was some fog. According to a local, the light fog is coming from the south where Southern California is experiencing an extended heat wave. Thus, it was warmer and more humid where normally it would be colder. She attributes these conditions to global warming. Either way, it was very nice for us since it wasn’t cold.
Foggy conditions are not always the best for photography, but that didn’t stop me.
