South Texas Birding 2016

We stayed in Harlingen, Texas during the first week of April and traveled around the area birding at King Ranch, Santa Ana NWR, Frontera Audubon, Estero Llano Texas St Park, South Padre Island and Old Port Isabel Road. A highlight of the trip was visiting the King Ranch, where we saw the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Audubon's Oriole and the Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet. No birding trip to this area is complete without driving the Old Port Isabel Road to search for the Aplomado Falcon. The unpaved, rutty road traverses many miles of open grassland that is home to several rare bird species. We found the Falcon just before sunset. Willie's BBQ in Alamo, Texas has some of the best food on the planet. If you are in the Rio Grande Valley make sure to try Willie's.
