Having decided that he would share his knowledge, Buddha sought out five of the ascetics he had formerly associated with.
It was to these five in the Deer Park in Benares that the Buddha gave his first teaching, referred to as 'Setting into Motion the Wheel of Dhamma'. The eight-spoked wheel represents the Eight-Fold Path to Enlightment.
