Deadvlei
A notable feature of Deadvlei is that it used to be an oasis with several acacia trees; afterwards, the river that watered the oasis changed its course. When the Tsauchab River flooded, the silt flooded this little valley in the dunes, engulfing these trees and the heat pounded that silt into hard clay. When you look at the trapped trees, they look no different than a tree that died a few weeks ago – but this flood happened about 900 years ago. The pan is thus punctuated by blackened, dead acacia trees, in vivid contrast to the shiny white of the salty floor of the pan and the intense orange of the dunes.
Note the people in the right foreground to give you a sense of the immensity of the dunes.
