The Main Temple
The temple has three finely finished walls; the two side walls each contain five vaulted niches while the main wall has seven. The niches would probably have been used to house important religious objects. You can see at the right hand side of the image that the wall is steeply inclined; this has been caused by the erosion of the ground by rain water over the course of centuries when Machu Picchu lay abandoned.
Beneath the vaults we can see a massive rectangular stone that would have been used as an altar; it is presumed that mummies would have been placed on the altar to worship. It's been stated that the building never had a roof; this could be explained by the theory that the Sun God needed to receive the worship from the priests and the mummies in ritual ceremonies carried out at daybreak. Others state that the building was never completed before the Incas left the site.
